As a photographer, I’ve learned that the unexpected can happen during a photoshoot. That’s why I always bring along a few extra items that have come in handy on more than one occasion. Besides my camera (duh!) here are 10 unexpected (and expected) things that I bring to every photoshoot:
- Blue Tooth Speaker: Music is a great way to get clients to relax and get into the zone. I always bring my portable Blue Tooth speaker and ask clients to play their favorite tunes to help them feel comfortable and let loose.
- Confetti: Celebrating milestones or just adding a fun touch to a shoot is always a good idea. I carry a multi-colored confetti option and encourage clients to bring their own brand-colored confetti.
- Broom and Dustpan: If you’re going to use confetti, it’s important to leave the location clean and tidy. I always bring a broom and dustpan to make sure I leave the location better than I found it.
- Safety Pins: Wardrobe malfunctions can happen, and that’s where safety pins come in hand. It helps to tuck or pin areas that need adjustments, and it’s always good to be prepared.
- Extra Batteries: Of course, I always bring extra camera batteries, but I also carry AA and AAA batteries just in case. I’ve used them for clocks or flashlights when we needed to set the right time or lighting for a shot.
- Step Stool: Being short can sometimes be a challenge, so I always carry a step stool to help me get a higher angle. It’s super helpful when I need to take shots from above or get a more flattering headshot angle.
- Tissues: Texas Spring can be challenging with pollen in the air, which means clients might need to sneeze or experience mascara runs. I always bring tissues to make sure they’re comfortable and confident during the shoot.
- Tech Wipes: With so many computer and phone shots these days, smudges and fingerprints can be a nuisance. Tech wipes help to remove any smudges and make sure the final images look clean and professional.
- Hair Ties: Whether I’m tying back my own hair or helping clients cinch their dresses, it’s always good to have a couple of hair ties ready to go.
- Coffee (and water): On shoot days, I bring ALL the beverages. Coffee to keep up the energy or use in a shot. And water to stay hydrated.
In conclusion, every photoshoot is different, and being prepared for any situation is essential. These 10 items have helped me create better shots and make sure clients feel comfortable and confident during the shoot.
